A Greener Cleaner Future for Niagara Cruises in Niagara Falls, Canada

Respect Our Planet

Hornblower Niagara Cruises was all hands on board this past weekend to assist with ‘Niagara’s Semi Annual Clean Sweep’, a citywide event hosted by the city of Niagara Falls, Canada highlighting Waste Reduction Week from October 20 – 26, 2014. This is the first year the Fall Clean up kicked off, however it does follow a successful community Niagara Falls ‘Spring Clean Up’ that has been operating for the past 10 years.

A few members of the Hornblower Niagara Cruises team including, Jennifer Johnston, HR Generalist and Krystin Dowling, Payroll/ Project Coordinator, Korey Steward, Guest Services Manager, Corey Donovan, Director, Guest Services, Rose Devereux, Guest Services Supervisor, Sarah Rice, Safety Services Manager, Jeff Marques, Facilities & Safety Services Manager and Evan Doubblestyne, Marine Maintenance Technician were just some of the HNC friendly faces who rolled up their sleeves threw on their ball caps and volunteered their afternoon. Despite the cooler Autumn temperatures, volunteers across Niagara Falls worked up a sweat by picking up waste and recyclable items found along walkways, trails and main streets to enhance the city’s environment.

With a successful Spring event held in 2013 welcoming hundreds of volunteers and businesses in the community the event created a Fall event for residents and volunteers interested in continuing the effort in the cooler months. With an early morning registration that started at 9am the Hornblower Niagara Cruises team took on their designated area at George Bukator Park located between Dorchester Road and Stanley Avenue in Niagara Falls, Canada. With all smiles and laughs, the members were hard at work collecting findings that were later properly disposed in the waste and recycling.

Hornblower Niagara Cruises community initiative stems from Hornblower’s practice and commitment to ‘Respect our Planet.’ Hornblower companies including Alcatraz Cruises, Statue Cruises and Hornblower Cruises and Events are dedicated to environmental stewardship and promoting the value of the environment by encouraging and educating others to take action in their own communities. Environment, Health and Safety, Quality and Continual Improvements are the main ways Hornblower strives to serve the community and make it a greener and healthier environment.

Hornblower Niagara Cruises continues to practice and explore green programs including its most recent green initiative by educating teachers and students about the ecology, geology and history of the waters through the Hornblower Niagara Cruises Educational component. Teachers can source lesson plans about the environment in Niagara.

Aside from practicing green initiatives including operating the boats, having a green program set up for recycling ponchos and disposing of waste, this was the first ever community initiative for Hornblower Niagara Cruises participated in and will continue to do so as the team and the company grows.
